Born and raised in East Los Angeles, Mr. Oberstein developed a passion for law from a young age. Much of his inspiration came from his grandfather who ran away from his home in New York at the age of 14, joined the U.S. Calvary and protected border towns being
raided during the Mexican Revolution. This man of action who did right by people, in family, business and community motivated Mr. Oberstein to help others.

Inspired by his grandfather, Mr. Oberstein actively participated in the YMCA, Indian Guides and Boy Scouts of America. He also engaged in football and track, and achieved a first-degree black belt from Solomon Kaihewalu’s Academy of Self Defense. Known for
his competitive spirit, he trained individuals in self-defense, including women, children, LAPD police academy recruits, and military personnel.

Chance Oberstein then pursued his career in law, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Social Ecology, with a Specialization in Criminology, Law and Society, through the University of California Irvine, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. As an undergraduate,
Mr. Oberstein was the recipient of the President’s Undergraduate Research Fellowship and the University Community Service Award. Upon graduation, he was recognized for Outstanding Contribution, Social Ecology Program, Exceptional Achievements in Field Study,
Excellence in Research, and Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award.

He then completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence at the University of California Davis. Including work as a research assistant for
Professor
Floyd F. Feeney pursuing criminal justice reform and policy advocacy. He also served as the Class Representative to the Educational Policy Committee. Mr. Oberstein worked as an attorney for the Los Angeles Public
Defender’s Office trying cases on behalf of indigent clients for the majority of the 1990s. Then in his private practice, attorney Chance Oberstein honed his legal skills in complex case preparation, litigation and post-conviction relief.

Throughout his academic and professional career, Mr. Oberstein has made significant contributions to his community and the practice of law. He was included in the 1979 volume of The U.S. Jaycees Outstanding Young Men of America, and the 75th Edition of Who’s
Who in America, in 2022. He is also the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
